Beyond Job Titles: Recruiting for Purpose Potential
It’s now month two of no federal jobs report and decision-makers from the Fed to boardrooms across the US are flying blind. Private data is mixed, with payroll processor ADP noting job cuts in September but a better outlook in October. That said, there are rumblings of a discouraging job market. We’ve heard from candidates and employers alike that job postings are flooded with applicants. So, how might an applicant stand out in today’s market? And how might a potential employer navigate the veritable waves of resumes rolling their way?
What’s Not Working
Let’s start with what’s not working right now– minimum qualifications. Unfortunately for job seekers, it seems to be extra-competitive at the moment. Described as a “low-hire, low-fire” situation, today’s market is sluggish. This also makes the hiring process difficult for employers. With more talent than jobs, open positions are getting swamped with resumes from numerous qualified candidates.
What Purposeful Hiring Looks Like Now
Here at NuWave, one key attribute we look for in candidates is their personal vision and how they are creatively working toward it. The most impactful hires aren’t always the most experienced–they’re the most mission aligned. Taking this approach helps balance “checking the boxes” for experience with eagerness to work in impact. We ask, “does this candidate have passion and commitment for their field? How are they demonstrating it?”
A mission-driven candidate who goes beyond the basics can do so via multiple strategies. After all, the path to succeeding in the impact space is often, for better or worse, far from linear. For example, candidates may take a committee position in a professional association for their field. There’s pro bono, contract, or volunteer work related to their cause of choice as well. NuWave’s Tasheyia Thomas-Gardon notes, “Being flexible for nontraditional work…[helps] build up connections and networks. It’s a good way to stay close to the work.”
We also look for candidates who stay sharp for their respective fields. This looks like keeping up with industry trends and upskilling appropriately (remember: upskilling can include hard and soft skills). Essentially, we’re looking for candidates’ passion and commitment to growth.
There’s Still Opportunity
In short, whether you’re hiring or looking for a job right now, it’s a different market than a year or more ago. We are currently navigating a time of high uncertainty. However, there are still opportunities for purpose-driven organizations and professionals to find each other. It just may take different strategies than before.
